Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has given defenders across the Premier Soccer League a serious reason to worry.
The AmaZulu striker has exploded onto the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season with a remarkable scoring run, finding the back of the net seven times in just six league appearances, while also contributing one assist. His incredible start has put him firmly at the top of the PSL scoring charts, with the Zimbabwean forward already three goals clear of the players immediately behind him.
For AmaZulu, it is the kind of form that can transform a season. For opposition defenders, however, Ngwenya has quickly become one of the biggest problems they have to solve.
The 23-year-old has shown remarkable consistency in front of goal since the opening weeks of the campaign. He scored against Stellenbosch, found the net against Orlando Pirates, scored against Siwelele and then produced a two-goal performance against Mamelodi Sundowns. He followed that with another goal against Richards Bay before scoring the decisive goal against Marumo Gallants on 12 September.
His performance against Sundowns was particularly eye-catching. Despite AmaZulu eventually losing 5-2, Ngwenya managed to score twice against one of the strongest sides in the league. That display demonstrated that his goalscoring form is not simply coming against struggling opposition.
Against Siwelele, he showed another side to his game by scoring once and providing an assist in AmaZulu’s 2-0 victory.
From promising numbers to serious production
What makes Ngwenya’s current run even more impressive is the improvement compared with his first season at AmaZulu.
During the 2025/26 Premiership campaign, Ngwenya made 16 league appearances, starting 14 of them. He scored six goals and registered one assist, finishing the season with seven goal contributions.
Those numbers suggested that AmaZulu had a striker capable of making an impact, but his performances this season have taken that production to another level.
Ngwenya has already surpassed his entire league goal tally from last season after only six matches. His seven goals also mean he has produced more goals in approximately 463 minutes this season than he managed across 1,146 league minutes in the previous campaign.
That improvement is difficult to ignore.
His current league scoring rate stands at roughly 1.36 goals per 90 minutes, according to FBref, compared with 0.47 goals per 90 minutes last season.
A striker defenders cannot afford to ignore
Ngwenya’s numbers tell only part of the story.
His recent goals have come in different ways, showing a forward capable of threatening defenders in multiple situations. Against Marumo Gallants, for example, he scored with a powerful header after Nkosikhona Radebe delivered an accurate cross into the area.
That ability to score both with his feet and in the air gives opposing defenders another challenge. They cannot simply focus on stopping him from running in behind or closing down his shooting opportunities; they also have to account for his presence inside the penalty area.
His seven league goals have come from just 12 recorded shots this season, with nine of those attempts on target, according to FotMob.
That efficiency is perhaps the most frightening part of his current form.
AmaZulu’s new attacking weapon
AmaZulu currently sit third in the Betway Premiership standings, and Ngwenya’s goals have played an important role in their strong opening to the campaign.
The striker has also attracted increased attention outside the club. Recent reports indicate that interest in his services is growing, although AmaZulu have made it clear that they do not intend to sell him during the current season.
For now, Ngwenya’s focus appears to be simple: keep scoring and keep helping AmaZulu.
After a six-goal league campaign last season, he has already reached seven this time around. The challenge now is maintaining this extraordinary level of production over an entire season.
If his opening six matches are anything to go by, PSL defenders have every reason to be cautious.
Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya is no longer simply a promising AmaZulu striker. He has become the name sitting at the top of the PSL scoring charts — and every defence in the league now knows exactly who they have to stop.
