Mamelodi Sundowns produced another important result on the international stage on Saturday, defeating Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli 2-1 at Loftus Versfeld to win the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup and secure their place in the next stage of the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
The victory came through two goals from Nuno Santos, while Al Ahli’s only goal was recorded as an own goal against Sundowns goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams.
The result was particularly significant for Sundowns because the match was not simply another fixture. As the reigning African champions, they were competing for progression in FIFA’s global club competition, with the winner of the Pretoria encounter earning a place in the next phase.
Santos Makes the Difference
Sundowns started the match positively and eventually turned their pressure into the opening goal in the 17th minute.
Nuno Santos found the net with a header after Teboho Mokoena delivered the assist from a corner situation. The goal gave the home side an early advantage and reflected Sundowns’ ability to create danger from set pieces.
The lead, however, lasted only two minutes.
Al Ahli responded in the 19th minute when Feras Al-Buraikan’s close-range effort struck Ronwen Williams and ended up in the Sundowns goal. The goal was officially recorded as an own goal by Williams, bringing the score level at 1-1.
That quick response ensured that Sundowns had to continue working for the result rather than being able to control the match from an early advantage.
Williams Continues Despite Difficult Moment
Ronwen Williams was also involved in another notable moment during the match after taking a strong challenge that resulted in bleeding from his mouth.
The incident understandably attracted attention, with some observers questioning whether the Sundowns captain had suffered an injury. By defeating the AFC Champions League Elite winners, Sundowns have now won the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup and progressed to the final stages of the Intercontinental Cup.
Their next route is also now clearer. Sundowns will face the winner of the FIFA Derby of the Americas in the Challenger Cup. That fixture will involve CONCACAF Champions Cup holders Toluca and the eventual 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores champions. The winner of the Challenger Cup will then earn the opportunity to face UEFA Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final.
For Sundowns, therefore, Saturday’s victory keeps their campaign alive on the global stage and moves them one step closer to a potential meeting with the European champions.
A Significant Night at Loftus
The 2-1 result also gave Sundowns another opportunity to test themselves against a leading club from outside Africa.
Al Ahli arrived in Pretoria as the reigning Asian champions, having secured their place in the tournament after defeating Auckland FC in the opening African-Asian-Pacific play-off. Sundowns were therefore facing the winners of the AFC Champions League Elite in a match that determined which club would progress to the next phase.
Sundowns responded with a performance built around possession, attacking pressure and two decisive moments from Santos.
Williams’ own goal briefly put Al Ahli back into the contest, but Sundowns recovered and eventually found the winning goal through Santos.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-1 victory, a Santos brace and, most importantly for the African champions, progression in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
