There is something familiar about Njabulo Blom being back in South African football.
The midfielder has spent the last few years moving between different football environments, from Kaizer Chiefs to Major League Soccer and then Indonesia. Now, at 26, he has returned to the Betway Premiership with a different objective: to play competitive football, settle into a new environment and rediscover the level that once made him one of the most talked-about young midfielders in the country.
That next chapter will be written in the Cape Winelands.
Stellenbosch FC have officially confirmed that Blom has joined the club on a season-long loan from Indonesian Super League side Borneo Samarinda. The formalities were completed before Monday’s transfer deadline, and the two-time Bafana Bafana international has already arrived in Stellenbosch.
A return that carries some history
Blom is not returning to South Africa as an unknown quantity.
He came through the Kaizer Chiefs system and enjoyed two spells with the Soweto giants. His performances eventually earned him a move to St. Louis City SC in Major League Soccer before another international chapter took him to Indonesia.
Now he is back in the country, but the circumstances are different.
Rather than returning to his former club, Blom has chosen a new setting in which to rebuild his rhythm and compete for regular football.
That makes the Stellenbosch move more than just another transfer on the list.
Why Stellenbosch appealed to Blom
Blom’s own explanation gives an important insight into why he accepted the move.
He described Stellenbosch as a professional and well-run club and pointed to the success enjoyed by players who have previously passed through the team. For him, the environment presented an opportunity to grow while getting back to competitive football.
That is significant because the midfielder is not presenting the move simply as a return home.
He is looking for the right football environment.
And Stellenbosch gives him a club where expectations are clear, while also providing an opportunity to work under a coach he already knows.
Gavin Hunt reunion adds another layer
Blom will be reunited with Gavin Hunt, the coach he has previously worked with.
That familiarity could make his transition into the Stellenbosch squad easier. More importantly, Blom himself believes Hunt’s demands can help him improve.
The midfielder said Hunt expects a lot from his players and that this can help him “get back to my best.”
It is a revealing comment.
Blom knows there is work to do, and his arrival appears to be driven as much by the desire to rebuild his football as it is by the opportunity to join another club.
What Blom brings to Stellenbosch
For Stellenbosch, the move adds a player with experience beyond South Africa.
Blom has played in the domestic top flight, represented Bafana Bafana and experienced football outside the country. The club’s announcement confirms that he arrives with domestic and international experience, while his two Bafana caps underline his involvement at senior international level.
He will wear the No. 35 shirt for Stellenbosch.
His presence also gives Hunt another experienced midfield option as the Maroons continue their campaign.
The exact role Blom eventually settles into will depend on the coach and the team’s needs, but the opportunity is clear: get back onto the pitch, build consistency and contribute to Stellenbosch’s season.
A reunion with Chiefs could come quickly
There is already an interesting fixture on the horizon.
Stellenbosch are scheduled to face Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 17 October 2026, creating the possibility of Blom facing the club where he made his name in South African football. Stellenbosch’s official announcement specifically identifies the fixture as a potential debut opportunity for the midfielder.
If selected, it would give the transfer an immediate storyline.
Blom would not simply be making his return to South African league football; he could potentially make his Stellenbosch debut against a club deeply connected to his own career.
That match is still weeks away, and selection cannot be assumed. But the possibility adds an intriguing subplot to an already interesting move.
A fresh start, rather than a step backwards
For Blom, the important part of this transfer may ultimately have little to do with the headlines surrounding it.
He has experienced football in different countries and now has another opportunity to establish himself.
At Stellenbosch, the midfielder can concentrate on the basics that matter most to any player trying to regain momentum: training, competing, earning minutes and becoming an important part of the team.
He has already made his intentions clear. He wants to build relationships with his new teammates, embrace the challenge and help the club achieve its objectives.
The next part of the story will be decided on the pitch.
For now, Njabulo Blom is back in South Africa, wearing Stellenbosch colours and beginning another chapter under Gavin Hunt. And after a career that has already taken him well beyond the familiar surroundings of the PSL, this loan gives him a chance to remind South African football exactly what he can do.
