The 2026/27 Premier Soccer League transfer window has officially closed, bringing an end to a busy period of recruitment for some of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
Orlando Pirates were among the most active teams in the market, making a large number of changes to their squad after losing several important players. Mamelodi Sundowns also strengthened their squad, particularly after injuries created concerns in key positions.
Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, made several quality additions but still leave the transfer window with questions surrounding their attacking options and whether the squad has everything coach Fernando Da Cruz needs.
The timing is particularly interesting because Sundowns and Pirates currently occupy the top two positions in the Betway Premiership standings, while Chiefs are further down the table and still searching for greater consistency.
Orlando Pirates Make Major Changes
Orlando Pirates have undergone one of the biggest squad changes among the title contenders.
The Buccaneers lost several players during the transfer period, including Relebohile Mofokeng, Patrick Maswanganyi, Melusi Buthelezi and Deano van Rooyen.
The club responded by bringing in a significant number of new players.
Pirates added Mthetheleli Mthiyane from Stellenbosch FC, Sbangani Zulu from Richards Bay, Bohlale Ngwato, Ghampani Lungu and Neo Rapoo from Siwelele, Matome Mmolai, Sebastian Pedersen from Norwegian club Sogndal, Mohau Nkota on loan from Al-Ettifaq and Bheki Mabuza from Marumo Gallants.
The club also completed the signing of Bulelani Sigomoshe from Milford FC.
The recruitment has given coach Abdeslam Ouaddou a considerably larger group to work with.
That depth could be particularly important because Pirates are competing domestically as well as in the CAF Champions League.
Ouaddou has previously spoken about the importance of having enough players for a demanding season, while also acknowledging the challenge of keeping a large squad motivated when not everyone can play every match.
The early performances of some of the new arrivals have also provided encouragement.
Ghampani Lungu, for example, has received backing from Ouaddou after making the move from Siwelele, with the coach highlighting how quickly the player adapted to his new surroundings.
Pirates also addressed their need for additional depth at right-back with the signing of Bulelani Sigomoshe following the departure of Van Rooyen.
That suggests the club’s recruitment was not simply about increasing the number of players available. Several additions were made with specific squad requirements in mind.
Mamelodi Sundowns Strengthen an Already Strong Squad
Mamelodi Sundowns entered the transfer window with one of the strongest squads in South African football, but the club still identified areas that needed reinforcement.
The Brazilians brought in several players, including Antonio Van Wyk, Cassius Mailula, Siyanda Ndlovu, Deano Van Rooyen, Thabo Cele and Thabang Matuludi.
One of the most important additions was Matuludi.
And yes, the name you used is correct: Thabang Matuludi.
The right-back joined Sundowns after Khuliso Mudau suffered a long-term injury, leaving the club needing additional depth in that position.
Matuludi therefore represents an important piece of recruitment because he can provide an option at right-back while Mudau is unavailable.
Sundowns have also strengthened their midfield with the addition of Thabo Cele, while Deano Van Rooyen brings further defensive depth.
Antonio Van Wyk returned to South Africa from SV Ried, Cassius Mailula returned following his spell with Toronto FC and Siyanda Ndlovu joined from Golden Arrows.
The depth is important because Sundowns are competing on several fronts.
The club has domestic responsibilities while also dealing with the demands of continental football.
Coach Miguel Cardoso has explained the need for a large squad by pointing to the number of matches Sundowns face and the need to rotate players.
He has indicated that the team can sometimes need to change six, seven or even eight players between matches to maintain freshness.
That makes the decision to strengthen the squad easier to understand.
Sundowns are not simply preparing for one competition. They need enough quality across the squad to remain competitive when injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion become factors.
Sundowns Currently Lead the PSL
The transfer-window story becomes even more interesting when the current league standings are considered.
Mamelodi Sundowns are currently at the top of the Betway Premiership with 20 points from eight matches.
Orlando Pirates are second with 19 points from seven matches, while Kaizer Chiefs are fourth with 13 points from seven matches.
The standings provide an interesting backdrop to the transfer activity.
Sundowns and Pirates have both strengthened their squads while already competing near the top of the table.
For Sundowns, the challenge will be maintaining their position while managing injuries and their demanding schedule.
For Pirates, the challenge will be integrating a large number of new players without losing the consistency that has put them among the early league leaders.
Kaizer Chiefs Make Quality Signings
Kaizer Chiefs have also been active in the transfer market, although their recruitment has received more scrutiny.
The club added Thabo Moloisane from Stellenbosch FC, goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, Tanzanian midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko, Langelihle Phili from Stellenbosch and Faiz Abrahams on loan from Stellenbosch.
Chiefs also made Khanyisa Mayo’s move permanent after his loan spell.
There is clearly quality among those additions.
However, one issue has continued to dominate discussions around Chiefs: the need for greater attacking efficiency.
Earlier in the transfer window, Da Cruz identified a striker, two wingers and an attacking midfielder among the profiles he wanted to add to his squad.
That helps explain why some supporters continued to look for another attacking signing before the window closed.
However, Da Cruz’s position later appeared to change.
On September 4, the Chiefs coach said he was happy with the squad and was not requesting additional signings, while leaving open the possibility of the club acting if an exceptional opportunity became available.
Therefore, it would be too simplistic to say that Da Cruz publicly demanded another striker right up until the end of the transfer window.
His earlier comments showed that he wanted additional attacking profiles, but his later comments indicated that he was satisfied with the squad available to him.
The Number Nine Question Remains
Despite that, questions about the Chiefs attack have not disappeared.
Da Cruz himself has criticised the team’s finishing after matches.
Following the 3-2 victory over Siwelele, the Chiefs coach pointed to the team’s inability to convert some of the opportunities created and also raised concerns about the team’s reaction after conceding goals.
That is an important distinction.
The issue is not necessarily that Chiefs have no attacking quality.
The bigger question is whether the available attackers can consistently turn chances into goals.
That is something that will only become clear as the season progresses.
Chiefs have also had to deal with injuries and positional changes, particularly in defence.
At different stages, Da Cruz has had to use players in positions that are not necessarily their natural roles, adding another layer of difficulty to the team’s early-season development.
Pirates, Sundowns and Chiefs Enter a New Phase
With the transfer window now closed, the focus moves away from recruitment and towards what the coaches can produce with the squads they have.
For Orlando Pirates, the major task will be integrating a large group of new players while competing across multiple competitions.
The club has invested heavily in squad depth, and the next few months will show how effectively those additions can be incorporated into the team.
Mamelodi Sundowns have taken a slightly different approach.
They already had a strong squad, but the club strengthened several areas and reacted to injuries such as Mudau’s absence.
The arrival of Matuludi is particularly significant because it gives Sundowns another option at right-back at a time when they need depth.
Kaizer Chiefs have also added quality, with players such as Mayo, Moloisane, Bitegeko, Leaner, Phili and Abrahams giving Da Cruz more options.
However, the coach will now have to find the right combinations and improve the team’s consistency.
The Real Test Starts After the Transfer Window
Transfer windows are ultimately judged by what happens on the pitch.
A club can make numerous signings and still struggle to produce results if the new players do not fit the tactical system.
Another club can make fewer additions and achieve significant improvement if the recruitment addresses its most important weaknesses.
For now, Sundowns and Pirates have the advantage of sitting at the top of the Betway Premiership standings, while Chiefs remain in the chasing group.
The transfer window has closed, but the debate surrounding the three clubs is far from over.
Pirates now have to prove that their major squad overhaul can deliver consistency.
Sundowns must show that their additional depth can help them deal with injuries, rotation and continental commitments.
Chiefs, meanwhile, must demonstrate that the players already recruited can provide the goals, creativity and consistency required to close the gap on the teams above them.
The biggest question is no longer which club signed the most players.
It is whether the changes made during the transfer window will translate into better performances when the pressure increases.
That answer will be decided on the pitch.
