SAFA Issues Apology and Forms Emergency Administrative Committee After World Cup Visa Embarrassment

Johannesburg – South Africa

South African football is facing renewed scrutiny after the South African Football Association (SAFA) issued an apology and confirmed the establishment of an emergency administrative committee following a serious visa-related disruption ahead of the national team’s planned preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Bafana Bafana squad was scheduled to travel to Pachuca, Mexico, where they were expected to set up their official pre-World Cup training camp. The team had planned to depart on a charter flight to Mexico City before continuing to their base camp. However, administrative complications linked to travel documentation led to a delayed departure, triggering widespread criticism from stakeholders.

The situation quickly escalated into a national talking point after Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie publicly condemned the handling of the matter, describing the incident as “embarrassing and grossly unfair” to both players and technical staff.

In a strongly worded statement shared on social media platform X, McKenzie expressed frustration over the incident and called for accountability within SAFA structures.

He stated that a formal report had been requested and insisted that action must be taken against those responsible, adding that the situation had created a negative public image for South African football administration.

Following mounting pressure, SAFA convened an emergency committee meeting on Sunday night, 31 May 2026, to urgently address the visa complications as well as other logistical concerns surrounding the national team’s World Cup preparations.

In an official statement released on Monday morning, SAFA confirmed that the squad will now depart on Monday, with revised arrangements in place to avoid further disruption.

The association also announced the formation of a three-member administrative delegation to oversee World Cup travel and logistics. The team will include Head of Delegation David Molwantwa, Mxolisi Sibam, and Team Manager Vincent Tseka, who will be responsible for ensuring smoother coordination going forward.

The decision marks an attempt by SAFA to restore confidence in its operational planning after what many have described as a preventable administrative failure at a critical moment in the national team’s World Cup build-up.

📊 What This Means for Bafana Bafana

The incident highlights ongoing concerns around administrative efficiency in South African football structures, especially as the team prepares for one of the most important tournaments in world football.

With the World Cup approaching, SAFA will now be under pressure to ensure that logistical failures do not distract from on-field preparation.
