Mbekezeli Mbokazi is back: From season-ending injury scare to Chicago Fire return

Mbekezeli Mbokazi

Mbekezeli Mbokazi has made a remarkable return to competitive football after an injury had initially threatened to end his 2026 MLS season.

Just weeks ago, the South African defender was facing a very different reality.

After suffering a serious thigh injury following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Chicago Fire coach Gregg Berhalter announced that Mbokazi would miss the remainder of the MLS campaign. The 20-year-old had also undergone surgery in Finland as part of his recovery.

Now, against all expectations, the centre-back is back on the pitch.

And he did not return quietly.

Mbokazi starts as Chicago Fire keep a clean sheet

Mbokazi was named in Chicago Fire’s starting XI for their away meeting with Charlotte FC on September 26.

The Fire secured a 1-0 victory, with Johan Gómez scoring the decisive goal in the 58th minute. Mbokazi started at centre-back before being replaced by Justin Reynolds in the 80th minute.

For Chicago, the result was important.

For Mbokazi, however, the significance was much greater.

This was his first competitive appearance since May 23, when he played in Chicago’s 2-1 victory over Toronto FC. He subsequently represented South Africa at the World Cup before the thigh injury interrupted his season.

After spending months recovering, he was finally back where he wanted to be — on the football pitch.

The comeback nobody expected this soon

The initial prognosis painted a bleak picture for Mbokazi.

When the thigh tear was confirmed in July, Berhalter said the defender would miss the rest of the MLS season.

“Mbo being out for the year is a tough one,” Berhalter said at the time.

That made his eventual return in September particularly notable.

Berhalter later acknowledged that his original assessment had been premature, explaining that Mbokazi was progressing well through his rehabilitation and that a return before the end of the season was possible.

Mbokazi then returned to group training, further indicating that his recovery was moving faster than originally expected.

Now the recovery has reached its most important stage: competitive football.

Why Mbokazi’s return matters to Bafana Bafana

Mbokazi’s comeback is not only significant for Chicago Fire.

It will also attract attention from South Africa.

Before his injury, the young centre-back had rapidly established himself as one of the country’s emerging defensive talents. He played every minute of Bafana Bafana’s historic 2026 World Cup campaign, as South Africa reached the knockout stage.

His performances had also earned him recognition in MLS.

Mbokazi was voted into the 2026 MLS All-Star team, although his injury prevented him from taking part.

That makes the injury particularly frustrating when viewed against the trajectory of his year.

He had gone from Orlando Pirates youngster to MLS starter, World Cup defender and MLS All-Star selection — only to suddenly find himself watching from the sidelines.

His return now gives him an opportunity to rebuild that momentum.

The most important part comes next

It would be tempting to look at one appearance and declare Mbokazi completely recovered.

That would be premature.

He played 80 minutes against Charlotte, which is an encouraging first step, but returning from a significant thigh injury is about more than simply completing one match.

Chicago will likely need to manage his minutes and workload carefully as he rebuilds his match fitness.

The fact that he was trusted to start, however, is significant.

And the timing could hardly be more interesting.

The Fire are entering an important stage of their MLS campaign, while South Africa have AFCON 2027 qualifying matches against Kenya approaching in November.

If Mbokazi can remain healthy and gradually return to his previous level, his availability could become an important storyline for both club and country.

From being ruled out to being back

Perhaps the most interesting part of Mbokazi’s story is the speed of the turnaround.

In August, the expectation was that his season was over.

In September, he was back in training.

Now, he has started an MLS match and helped Chicago Fire leave Charlotte with a clean sheet.

That does not erase the injury or guarantee that he will immediately return to his best form.

But it does change the conversation.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s 2026 season is no longer over.

The defender has another chance to build on what was already a breakthrough year.

And after everything that happened over the past two months, simply seeing his name back on a Chicago Fire team sheet is a story in itself.
